Oliver Bearman Penalized for Red Flag Infraction at British GP
Oliver Bearman, driving for Haas F1 Team, will face a 10-place grid penalty for disregarding red flags during the third free practice session (FP3) at the British Grand Prix. The incident occurred when Bearman lost control of his car while entering the pit lane at high speed—260 km/h—after a red flag was shown due to Gabriel Bortoleto’s crash.
The FIA stewards confirmed that Bearman ignored regulations that require drivers to reduce speed under red flags. Evidence revealed he accelerated significantly as he approached the pit entry, ultimately resulting in a collision with the barriers that stripped most of his car’s nose. Stewards noted that he entered the pit lane faster than his previous in-lap under normal conditions.
According to the stewards’ report, "The driver of Car 87 did not proceed slowly back to the pitlane when he accelerated," underestimating the impact of cold brakes after a slower lap under the red flag. As a result, Bearman has accrued four additional penalty points, bringing his total to eight. This follows a prior penalty incurred at Monaco for a similar violation.
Compounding the situation, debris from Bearman’s car had already caused a red flag in FP3, further showcasing the session’s troubled nature.
This penalty emphasizes the importance of adherence to safety protocols in Formula 1, particularly under cautionary conditions.
