Bottas Set for F1 Return with Cadillac in 2026 After Year as Mercedes Reserve
Valtteri Bottas is poised to re-enter the Formula 1 grid with Cadillac in 2026, following a year serving as a reserve driver for Mercedes. Bottas, who was sidelined after Sauber secured Nico Hulkenberg and Gabriel Bortoleto for their upcoming Audi era, noted that his time away has enhanced his perspective on being a race driver.
Reflecting on his hiatus, Bottas remarked, “Overall now when I look at it, it’s actually been a good year. I’ve managed to secure my spot again as a race driver in Formula 1. And I had a year of learning things, being a bit on the other side of the team.” He emphasized the insights gained from directly observing team dynamics and communication, stating, “I think I’ve learned quite a few things about teamwork and how things work while the car is on track.”
Bottas expressed appreciation for the sport, underscoring its uniqueness, “To be a Formula 1 driver, one of the 20 – or next year, 22 – is very unique. And I’ll definitely have a different approach to the sport in that sense.” His focus has been primarily on the Cadillac project, with other opportunities not explored deeply as he prioritized this collaboration.
“I set Cadillac as a priority quite early on this year,” Bottas explained. “So that was really the main focus… it made me obviously very, very happy and everything kind of worked out as planned.” He also acknowledged the political nuances of F1, reflecting, “I did learn from last year that you should never get too confident.”
The announcement of his signing with Cadillac resonated with Bottas deeply, evoking emotions akin to those felt during his first F1 contract. “That day, announcement day in New York just made me realize, again, that I’m going to be a Formula 1 driver, which I appreciate much more now than what I did some years ago.”
Bottas’s return signals a renewed commitment to the championship, with expectations for a robust performance as part of the burgeoning Cadillac team.
