Brad Pitt Discusses the Pressure of Formula 1 in Upcoming Film
In a recent interview with GQ, Brad Pitt drew parallels between the intense scrutiny faced by Formula 1 drivers and the challenges of celebrity life. As he prepares for his role as Sonny Hayes, a washed-up former driver in an upcoming film, Pitt highlighted the isolation and pressure inherent in both professions.
Pitt noted, “There’s an isolation… Even a loneliness when you don’t feel like things are clicking.” He elaborated on the relentless public criticism faced by F1 drivers, stating, “Those guys are so scrutinized… They’ve got to have thicker skin than even us.”
His comments resonate within the F1 community, where drivers are often subjected to harsh judgment. For instance, Lando Norris’ resilience has been questioned, while Max Verstappen’s attitude and radio exchanges frequently draw ire. Similarly, Lewis Hamilton contends with critiques regarding his activism and style choices.
The film’s trailers suggest a focus on the extreme pressures drivers endure, with co-star Javier Bardem describing Pitt’s character as “a gambling junkie” living in a van. This portrayal echoes the real-world experiences of many F1 athletes, who are scheduled to make cameo appearances in the film.
Director Joseph Kosinski commended the current F1 grid for their openness during filming, stating, “They were all incredibly gracious… When [the drivers] saw how determined we were to make it authentic… they embraced us.”
As the film approaches release, it promises to shed light on the unique challenges faced by F1 drivers, further enriching the narrative of a sport defined by high stakes and relentless public fascination.
