Abu Dhabi Pirelli Tire Test: Crawford Tops Timesheets Amid 2026 Aerodynamic Innovations
Abu Dhabi, UAE – Jak Crawford of Aston Martin emerged as the fastest driver during the Pirelli tire test at Yas Marina, posting a time of 1:23.766 using 2025 tires. His performance outpaced Sauber’s Paul Aron by nearly a second, while Williams driver Luke Browning secured third with a time of 1:23.930.
The test primarily focused on aerodynamic developments for the 2026 season, with Mercedes and Ferrari leading the way in implementing active aerodynamic systems. Mercedes featured a hydraulic front wing setup designed for low drag on straights and high downforce in corners, while Ferrari’s modifications, although less visually striking, served a similar purpose. Both teams were granted exemptions from the imposed 300 kph speed limit for specific sections, allowing for more realistic data collection.
The day was marked by a single red flag incident caused by Haas reserve Ryo Hirakawa, who spun into a barrier at Turn 1. Notable drivers included Lando Norris, who celebrated his recent championship win with a special gold helmet and boots while logging 71 laps before handing over to Oscar Piastri in the afternoon. Ferrari rotated Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton, while Haas utilized different drivers including Ollie Bearman and Esteban Ocon, the latter of whom was sidelined by an engine issue after only four laps.
Red Bull’s Isack Hadjar completed the full day as tire tester, allowing the team to maintain its full lineup for next season. The regulations permit teams to run their race drivers alongside a rookie in the Young Driver Test structure.
Pirelli’s motorsport boss Mario Isola emphasized the significance of this test, stating, “This day was an excellent opportunity for all teams to trial the definitive 2026 tires, with compounds set to be confirmed Monday.” He noted that understanding tire degradation and performance gaps remains critical as they finalize compounds ahead of the upcoming Barcelona test in January.
The test not only highlighted developments in tire technology but also provided a platform for teams to refine their systems in preparation for the regulatory changes coming next season.
