Alonso’s Performance at British GP Qualifying: Small Steps for Aston Martin
Fernando Alonso highlighted modest progress for Aston Martin during qualifying for the British Grand Prix, placing ninth but set to start seventh due to penalties affecting other drivers. The team introduced a new floor and top bodywork for the AMR25 at Silverstone, building on prior updates from Imola, focusing on enhancing airflow around the rear tires.
Team principal Andy Cowell explained the technical focus of these upgrades: “This one focuses more on the floor with a small modification to the top bodywork.” He noted that further updates for 2025 are unlikely, having completed the final scheduled wind tunnel run.
Reflecting on his qualifying performance, Alonso remarked, “Upgrades were tested yesterday with slight advantage… but small.” He acknowledged the competitive landscape, mentioning strong performances from Haas and Alpine, and emphasized the ongoing need for improvement: “We still need to work hard every weekend.”
Alonso’s ninth-place qualifying position was boosted to seventh after a three-place penalty for Andrea Kimi Antonelli and a ten-place penalty for Oliver Bearman. Looking ahead to the race, he expressed caution regarding the competition, particularly mentioning the faster-than-expected performance of Williams: “They will be a threat. Tsunoda starting P11… it’s going to be a long race.”
Despite minor setbacks during practice due to a missed soft tire run, Alonso remains optimistic about the race pace, stating, “In the long run, the car felt good. Tyres felt good as well, so no concerns there.” The Spanish driver aims to capitalize on the improvements and secure points for Aston Martin in tomorrow’s race.
