FIA Management Shake-Up: Sara Mariani Departs as Director of Sustainability and D&I
In a significant restructuring move, the FIA has parted ways with Sara Mariani, its Director of Sustainability, Diversity, and Inclusion (D&I), effective June 20, 2025. Mariani, who held the position for 18 months, will leave following the organization’s decision to split its sustainability and D&I functions into separate divisions.
Mariani expressed her sentiments in an out-of-office email, noting, "It is, sadly, time to say goodbye… I did not expect it would end so abruptly but life goes on." She emphasized the importance of talent and dedication in professional environments, particularly regarding women’s leadership roles.
The FIA confirmed that the sustainability program will now operate under Willem Groenewald, Secretary General for Mobility, while D&I will be overseen by Alessandra Malhame, Senior Human Resources Director. This restructuring aims to integrate the FIA’s internal and external D&I initiatives more effectively.
Mariani’s exit follows other notable personnel changes, including the resignation of Deputy President for Sport Robert Reid in April. The organization has recently seen multiple departures, including high-profile roles such as Chief Executive Officer Natalie Robyn and head of compliance Paolo Basarri.
The FIA stated its gratitude for Mariani’s contributions, ensuring that she will receive necessary support during this transition. As the federation navigates these changes, it faces scrutiny over its governance and operational standards, consistent with wider shifts in high-level FIA management.
