Austrian Grand Prix: Bortoleto Breaks Through, Alonso Holds Firm
Spielberg, Austria – In a dramatic display at the Austrian Grand Prix, rookie Gabriel Bortoleto secured his first Formula 1 points, finishing eighth, despite fierce competition from two-time world champion Fernando Alonso, who finished seventh. This race marked a pivotal moment for the Brazilian, who is navigating his inaugural F1 season with Sauber.
Bortoleto, just 20 years old and quickly rising through the ranks after consecutive championships in F3 and F2, attempted to challenge Alonso, 43, for position. The young driver, who has yet to see Alonso’s career debut year of 2001, reflected on the experience: “It was fun, especially because he raced very hard. Luckily, we didn’t crash,” Bortoleto remarked. He noted that he looks forward to further development, stating, "This is just the beginning… and I aim for even bigger results."
Alonso, employing his extensive racecraft, showcased adept strategic maneuvers to fend off Bortoleto. “I had to try different moves to confuse a little bit Gabi,” he explained, illustrating the tactical play at high speeds. The veteran’s clever driving not only defended his position but also involved momentarily challenging race leader Lando Norris.
Sauber’s performance was underscored by a double points finish, with Alonso and teammate Nico Hulkenberg finishing seventh and ninth respectively. This outcome is indicative of the team’s significant progress compared to last season, where they recorded their only points in the penultimate race. Hulkenberg praised his teammate’s efforts, noting, “It was coming. I could see it from a long way off. Very happy for him and for the entire team.”
Bortoleto’s performance at the Red Bull Ring, marked by qualifying in Q3 for the first time, signals a strong start to his career in F1, and both he and Hulkenberg aim to maintain momentum as the season progresses.
The Austrian Grand Prix served as a promising milestone for Sauber and its drivers as they continue their pursuit of competitive consistency on the grid.
