Verstappen Puzzled After Frantic Finish at Spanish Grand Prix
Barcelona, Spain – Max Verstappen’s chaotic end to the Spanish Grand Prix has raised eyebrows within Red Bull Racing, particularly from advisor Helmut Marko. The reigning champion experienced a dramatic final laps sequence that culminated in a series of incidents and penalties.
During the race, Verstappen lost third position to Charles Leclerc following a safety car restart on lap 61. Marko described this moment as crucial, noting, "Leclerc drove into Max’s car" as they collided on the straight. This collision triggered Verstappen’s frustrations, leading to a controversial incident with Mercedes’ George Russell shortly thereafter.
Verstappen was initially instructed to relinquish fourth place back to Russell—a decision he reluctantly complied with “under protest.” This led to further complications when Verstappen, believed to allow Russell through, unexpectedly accelerated, resulting in a clash on lap 64. Marko expressed confusion over Verstappen’s thought process during this period, stating, "I don’t know what kind of misjudgment was going on inside him."
The incidents drew the attention of race stewards, who ultimately handed Verstappen a 10-second penalty and three penalty points, placing him on the verge of a race ban due to prior infractions. Reflecting on the situation, Marko remarked, "Emotions simply got the better of him," citing previous clashes with Russell that made the incident particularly unnecessary.
Post-race, Verstappen took to social media to apologize for his actions, admitting that the incident "shouldn’t have happened." Marko noted that discussions within the team were limited afterward due to Verstappen’s heated demeanor, stating, "The best thing is to leave him alone."
The Spanish Grand Prix concluded with Verstappen finishing in tenth place, a disappointing result that has stirred significant conversation regarding his conduct on the track.
