Verstappen’s Future at Red Bull: Horner Confident Amid Speculation
Red Bull Racing team principal Christian Horner remains optimistic about Max Verstappen’s tenure with the team, despite increasing speculation regarding the reigning world champion’s future. As discussions heat up ahead of the British Grand Prix, the possibility of a move to Mercedes in 2026 has become a focal point, fueled by comments from Mercedes boss Toto Wolff.
Horner addressed the media at Silverstone, reiterating the importance of the driver-team relationship. "Max has been with Red Bull since the very start of his career," he stated. "He has a great deal of faith in the team and the people around him." While confirming that Verstappen’s current contract extends to 2028, Horner acknowledged the ongoing chatter but emphasized internal clarity: "Everyone is very clear on where we’re at."
When questioned about the confidentiality of contract details, Horner indicated that performance components are often included. "His intention is that he will be there and driving for us in 2026," he asserted, while recognizing Verstappen’s allure to other teams.
The discussion has been largely spurred by George Russell’s contract situation at Mercedes, which expires at the end of the current season. Horner remarked on Russell’s standing: “It’s remarkable that George is still on the market,” suggesting there has been no engagement from Red Bull.
Looking ahead to the transformative 2026 season—predicted to be one of the largest regulatory shifts in Formula 1—Horner noted the uncertainty surrounding team performance: "You can’t predict the pecking order." His comments aimed to mitigate any implications that leaving Red Bull for Mercedes would guarantee greater success.
Concluding with a light-hearted remark about potential drivers like Oscar Piastri, Horner emphasized that his focus remains with Verstappen: “Max has made it quite clear that he would like to finish his career in a Red Bull car from start to finish.”
In summary, while speculation will undoubtedly persist, Red Bull appears committed to maintaining their relationship with Verstappen as they prepare for a pivotal future in Formula 1.
