Verstappen’s Controversial Penalty Sparks Debate Post-Spanish GP
Following the Spanish Grand Prix, Red Bull Racing team principal Christian Horner dismissed comments by former Formula 1 driver Nico Rosberg regarding Max Verstappen’s 10-second penalty for a collision with George Russell.
In the race’s closing laps, Verstappen was penalized after Red Bull instructed him to let Russell pass to mitigate potential penalties from an earlier incident. As Verstappen complied, contact occurred, leading to Russell’s car making contact with Verstappen’s.
Rosberg criticized the penalty as “very lenient,” stating, "In Max’s eyes he’s like 100% in the right. Why are you telling me to do this?" He labeled Verstappen’s action a "very intentional retaliation," reminiscent of Sebastian Vettel’s incident with Lewis Hamilton in Baku 2017, suggesting it warranted a black flag for intentional contact.
Horner’s response was succinct: “Nico’s quite sensational in the way he commentates, so we’ll leave it there.” Verstappen acknowledged Rosberg’s perspective, emphasizing, “That’s his opinion; everyone can have his opinion.”
This incident highlights the tension within the drivers and teams, as differing views on accountability and race conduct emerge in Formula 1.
