Imola GP: Andrea Kimi Antonelli Faces Challenges in Home Race Debut
Imola, Italy – Mercedes rookie Andrea Kimi Antonelli encountered difficulties during his first Formula 1 race on home soil. The 18-year-old, hailing from Bologna, struggled for confidence throughout the weekend, culminating in a retirement due to a throttle issue during the race.
On Saturday, Antonelli experienced challenges with car performance and ultimately finished the race in disappointment. Teammate George Russell managed to salvage a seventh-place finish, while Antonelli initially fended off pressure from Lewis Hamilton before retirement.
“It was probably my worst performance weekend, and I need to focus on recovering well for Monaco,” Antonelli stated. “I love the fans’ support but struggled to manage my energy, which affected my performance on track.”
The weekend included personal celebrations, such as inviting classmates to the paddock and engaging with fans, yet Antonelli realized he may need to manage his time and energy more effectively during such high-pressure events. “I need to learn to say ‘no’ and take time for myself,” he added.
Mercedes team representative Bradley Lord addressed the learning curve faced by Antonelli, emphasizing the need to prioritize performance amidst external pressures. “This was a significant weekend for him with a lot of attention. We will take insights from this experience to improve his focus during busy race weekends,” Lord indicated.
As Antonelli prepares for the upcoming Monaco GP, both he and the Mercedes team reflect on the lessons from Imola, aiming for enhanced performance and focus in future challenges.
