Piastri Secures Pole Position at Spanish Grand Prix
In a thrilling qualifying session for the Spanish Grand Prix, Oscar Piastri edged out his McLaren teammate Lando Norris to claim pole position. Piastri’s final lap of 1:11.546 beat Norris, who set a 1:11.755, by a margin of 0.209 seconds.
Norris, who had been on provisional pole after the initial Q3 runs, attributed his loss of pole to "too many mistakes" on his final lap. He specifically highlighted errors at Turn 1 and the exit of Turn 4, which compromised his overall speed. “It was just not the cleanest lap, but still improved, surprisingly. The pace was easily there,” Norris stated. This qualifying result places him second in the championship standings, trailing Piastri.
Both drivers acknowledged the challenges presented by the high temperatures affecting tire management. Norris noted, “It’s obviously very hot… struggling to look after the tyres for one lap, so the race is then much trickier.”
During the preceding Monaco GP, where Norris clinched his first victory, he discussed his efforts to enhance qualifying performance. Despite not securing pole, he remains optimistic about the car’s pace and potential in Sunday’s race. “I caught up nicely… just trying a little bit too much and not being quite tidy enough,” he explained.
With both drivers showing strong form, McLaren appears poised for a competitive race at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya.
