Austrian Grand Prix: Leclerc Acknowledges Progress Despite Performance Gap
Charles Leclerc expressed cautious optimism regarding Ferrari’s performance in the recent Austrian Grand Prix, despite finishing nearly 20 seconds behind race winner Lando Norris of McLaren. Norris secured pole position with a commanding half-second advantage and went on to maintain his lead, with teammate Oscar Piastri following closely.
Leclerc’s race strategy was marked by a noticeable deficit during the initial stint, but he reported improvements in the latter stages. “The first stint was poor on our side, but the second and last stint I thought were reasonable,” he stated. His time gap to Norris, while significant, reflects a consistent disadvantage seen throughout the season.
“The gap at the end of the race isn’t what we want, but it’s the gap we’ve faced. We are working relative to the others,” Leclerc said. He emphasized the recent advancements made by Ferrari, noting, “It’s a step forward… the team has done an incredible job.”
While the race experience became monotonous for Leclerc due to car management challenges, he aimed to maximize his performance. "From Turn 1 to the end, it was a very boring race… just managing quite a few issues," he elaborated. He acknowledged the importance of improved finishes, which could enhance Ferrari’s competitiveness against leading teams like McLaren and Red Bull.
Leclerc’s reflections underline a pivotal moment for Ferrari, who continue to pursue performance gains to close the gap to the front-running teams.
