McLaren’s Dominance Continues with Committed Driver Pairing
British Grand Prix, 2023 – McLaren CEO Zak Brown expressed confidence in the team’s future as both Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri remain committed to the organization, exemplifying a strong driver dynamic amid a season characterized by notable performance.
With McLaren currently leading the Constructors’ Championship by an impressive 207 points, Brown highlighted the team’s strategy to allow both drivers to compete robustly against each other. This approach, referred to as the "Papaya Rules," permits aggressive racing between teammates as long as it does not compromise team success. “It’s the same rules. Race each other hard, race each other clean,” Brown stated, reinforcing the ethos of healthy competition.
The relationship between Norris and Piastri appears resilient, even in the wake of a collision during the latter stages of the Canadian Grand Prix, which cost McLaren a podium. Their ability to race closely was notably demonstrated during the Austrian Grand Prix, where they battled for lead positions. “I think the relationship they have is fantastic,” Brown noted. “There’s no reason why they can’t have a big battle all the way to the end.”
While rivals Mercedes and Red Bull face speculation regarding their drivers’ future, Brown confirmed, “Our drivers aren’t going anywhere. They’re very happy, we’re very happy.” This stability poses a significant advantage for McLaren as they approach critical races in the upcoming season.
Norris, who topped Free Practice 2 at Silverstone, reflects the strength of the team’s current lineup. In contrast, Red Bull principal Christian Horner’s lighthearted commentary on the situation, suggesting Piastri as a potential replacement for Verstappen should he leave, underscores the competitive landscape and the value of McLaren’s driver assets.
With the British Grand Prix on the horizon, McLaren aims to leverage its strong performance and unified driver strategy to continue its success in Formula 1.
