Piastri Shows Improved Tyre Management in 2025 Season
Oscar Piastri has emerged as a formidable competitor in the 2025 Formula 1 season, demonstrating significant advancements in tyre management, a crucial aspect noted by McLaren team principal Andrea Stella. The Australian driver has notably closed the performance gap to teammate Lando Norris, often matching or exceeding his more experienced compatriot’s pace over race stints.
Stella highlighted that Piastri’s improvement is a result of concerted efforts in collaboration with the engineering team, aimed at refining his understanding of tyre dynamics. "Looking at the way Oscar is mastering and managing tyre degradation at the moment, no way that this improvement would come simply from the car," Stella remarked, emphasizing the impact of Piastri’s development and the team’s strategic insights.
Piastri has shifted criticism regarding his tyre usage from previous seasons, where excessive wear hindered his performance, to an admirable ability to maintain pace throughout races. His recent performance in the Miami Grand Prix showcased this, where he was competitive on hard tyres, even as Norris began to regain ground in the closing laps.
Stella added, "Even from Lando’s point of view, we’ve seen improvements, and in the final stint, Lando was at times even a little faster than Oscar." While Norris experienced setbacks with Verstappen that limited his challenge for the win, the ongoing rivalry promises to intensify as both drivers continue to evolve.
With the improvements in tyre management and a solid partnership between driver and engineers, the McLaren team appears poised for continued success in the remaining races of the season.
