Adrian Newey Embraces “Design Trance” at Aston Martin Ahead of 2026 F1 Regulations
Silverstone, UK – Adrian Newey, the renowned chief designer recently appointed as managing technical partner at Aston Martin, has entered what he describes as a “design trance,” focusing on the forthcoming 2026 Formula 1 regulations. Having transitioned from Red Bull Racing, Newey officially began his role in March 2025.
Newey emphasizes the opportunities presented by the new rules while acknowledging the pressure to deliver results. “Some of the motivation is that fear of failure,” he stated. “I’ve tried to learn to use that constructively… it’s a focused and tunnel-vision-like state.” This intense focus has led to noticeable changes in his personal life, with Newey admitting to a lack of social interaction, stating, “What limited processing power I have is all concentrated on the task at hand.”
With ongoing restructuring within Aston Martin’s technical department, including shifts in design and aerodynamics teams, Newey asserts that collaboration is crucial for future success. “We are a team of around 300 engineers,” he explained. “Collaboration… is the most important single aspect.”
Newey dedicates approximately 50% of his day to working directly with engineers, preferring one-on-one sessions for brainstorming over larger procedural meetings. “The big meetings… become procedural information exchanges, without actually coming up with new ideas,” he cautioned.
As the team races against deadlines to finalize major components—including the gearbox, chassis, and suspension systems—Newey remains committed to ensuring collective buy-in on design concepts. “I never want it to not be with everybody’s involvement and buy-in,” he affirmed, highlighting the importance of teamwork in developing their new car ahead of testing in January.
