Zak Brown Revives Williams FW11B at British Grand Prix
Silverstone, UK – In a nostalgic display during the Saturday festivities of the British Grand Prix, McLaren Racing CEO Zak Brown took control of the iconic 1987 Williams FW11B, a car famously driven by Nigel Mansell. This particular chassis is celebrated for its role in Mansell’s dramatic victory at Silverstone, where he notably broke the lap record while recovering from a tire puncture.
The FW11B, equipped with a 1.5-liter V6 turbo engine generating over 800 horsepower, highlighted Williams’ dominance in the 1987 Formula 1 season. Brown shared insights on the vehicle’s historical significance. "This was, if you remember, the very famous British Grand Prix where [Mansell] broke the track record and made that iconic move on Nelson Piquet," Brown explained.
Brown acquired the car through an unusual sponsorship arrangement with Williams. "I signed a deal with Williams, and when they asked what they could do for me, I said, ‘You can sell me a car!’" he recounted, pinpointing the FW11B as his choice.
Mansell’s 1987 victory remains a cornerstone in F1 history, characterized by his relentless pursuit to catch teammate Piquet. After a strategic pit stop, the drive culminated in a celebrated pass that captivated fans.
Following his commendable outing at Silverstone, Brown expressed his enthusiasm through social media, stating, "Incredibly special to drive the 1987 Grand Prix winning Williams FW11B around Silverstone… What an experience!"
This event precedes the upcoming Goodwood Festival of Speed, where Williams celebrates its 75th anniversary. Both the FW11 and FW14B will feature prominently, with Mansell set to pilot the FW11 for the first time since 1986.
