Norris Suffers in Final Qualifying at Spanish GP, Piastri Claims Pole
Barcelona, Spain — Lando Norris experienced a challenging final qualifying session at the Spanish Grand Prix, attributing his missed pole position to "too many mistakes." The McLaren driver initially held provisional pole with a time of 1m11.755s, narrowly ahead of teammate Oscar Piastri by 0.017 seconds. However, Piastri’s final run delivered an impressive 1m11.546s, securing the top spot by 0.209 seconds.
Reflecting on his performance, Norris noted, “Just a couple of little mistakes. Turn 1, which is kind of the first place you don’t want to make a mistake, harms the rest of the lap.” He identified critical errors in Turn 1 and at the exit of Turn 4, which hindered his overall time.
Despite the setback, Norris remained optimistic, stating, “The speed was easily there today… I still feel fine. I’m happy with second, especially in Barcelona – it’s not the end of the world.” He praised McLaren’s overall competitiveness and discussed challenges in managing tire performance during qualifying, particularly under the high temperatures in Barcelona.
Norris, currently second in the championship standings, expressed confidence in the team’s performance heading into the race, emphasizing that their pace throughout the weekend has been strong.
This qualifying session sets the stage for an intriguing race, with both McLaren drivers positioned to capitalize on their recent form and battle for points in front of a competitive field.
