Mexico City Grand Prix: Lando Norris Secures Pole Position with Impressive Lap
Lando Norris clinched pole position for the Mexico City Grand Prix with a commanding final lap of 1:15.586, exceeding expectations and highlighting McLaren’s competitive resurgence. This marks McLaren’s first pole since Oscar Piastri at Zandvoort, and places Norris in a favorable position ahead of key competitors, including Max Verstappen, who will start from fifth.
Norris expressed uncertainty about the quality of his lap during qualifying. “I didn’t have a delta, so I didn’t know if I was up or down,” he remarked. Despite self-identified areas for improvement, such as at Turn 6, he was pleasantly surprised by the final time displayed on his dashboard. “When I saw 15.5s, it put a pretty big smile on my face,” he added, emphasizing the significance of the moment.
The performance was a culmination of solid practice sessions, with Norris noting a consistent day: “FP3 was strong… all of my laps were good – no mistakes, no lock-ups.” While the car’s rapid pace presented challenges, he credited a sense of rhythm that ultimately propelled him to success.
Norris starts two rows ahead of teammate Piastri and Verstappen, an outcome he admitted was somewhat unexpected. “I feel like I’m doing a very good job,” he stated, reaffirming his confidence heading into the race. The McLaren driver’s pole position underscores both his skill and the potential of the team as they aim for strong results in the upcoming race.
