Norris Claims Pole at Austrian Grand Prix
Austrian Grand Prix, Qualifying Report
Lando Norris secured pole position for the Austrian Grand Prix, showcasing dominant form throughout qualifying. The McLaren driver set a blistering time of 1:03.971, marking a significant 0.521-second margin over Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc, the largest pole position gap of the season.
Norris’s performance was bolstered by his consistency across the weekend, having topped both practice sessions he participated in. "It was a good lap," Norris remarked. "I did what I planned to do, and when it goes right, it normally goes very, very well." His final lap improved his provisional time by 0.297 seconds.
Controversy marred the session as championship leader Oscar Piastri and reigning champion Max Verstappen failed to capitalize on their final laps, hindered by a yellow flag caused by Pierre Gasly’s spin at the final corner. Piastri, who had been on a warm-up lap, had to abandon his attempt, while Verstappen, who was on a flying lap, had to lift off prematurely.
Leclerc capitalized on the yellow flags to secure second place, albeit over half a second behind Norris. "We know we have a better car in the race than in qualifying," said Leclerc, expressing optimism for the race.
Piastri, placed third, acknowledged the challenge from Norris but remained confident about race pace. "I think our pace this weekend has looked very strong. I’m not planning on finishing third, that’s for sure," he stated.
Lewis Hamilton qualified fourth, trailing Leclerc by just 0.09 seconds, while George Russell rounded out the top five for Mercedes. Liam Lawson earned a commendable sixth place in his second Q3 appearance of the season. Verstappen, having his final lap compromised, settled for seventh.
Gabriel Bortoleto secured his first Q3 appearance in eighth, with Andrea Kimi Antonelli ninth, both drivers impacted by the yellow flags. Gasly will start tenth, having escaped damage from his spin.
