Cadillac’s 2026 Preparations Intensify with Sergio Perez’s Return to Formula 1 Testing
Sergio Perez has returned to Formula 1 for the first time in nearly a year, participating in a two-day test at Imola as part of Cadillac’s preparations for its entry in the 2026 season. This outing marks Perez’s first time behind the wheel since his last race with Red Bull in December 2024.
Cadillac has secured a 2023-specification Ferrari SF-23 for this testing session, as the team currently does not have an operational car of its own. The collaboration allows Cadillac to familiarize its personnel with various systems and simulate race weekends effectively.
“This test is timely, as it’s just before the January test,” Perez stated. “On these two days, I want to evaluate my physical readiness and pinpoint areas for improvement. It’s a great opportunity to start building rapport with the engineers and mechanics.”
The SF-23 is running in a distinctive all-black livery, diverging from its traditional red, with FIA officials present to ensure compliance with testing protocols. Data retrieval is restricted, focusing primarily on training efforts for Perez and the crew accompanying fellow driver Valtteri Bottas in anticipation of 2026.
In parallel, Cadillac test driver Colton Herta undertook his own testing in Italy earlier this month, utilizing a previous generation Formula 2 car at Monza ahead of his full-time transition to the category in the upcoming season.
