Pirelli Mandates Two-Stop Strategy for Qatar Grand Prix Due to Tire Wear Concerns
In a significant decision ahead of the Qatar Grand Prix, Pirelli has enforced a maximum tire stint of 25 laps, necessitating a two-stop race strategy. This regulation arises from concerns regarding excessive wear on tires, particularly noted last year on the high-speed Lusail International Circuit.
The Qatar Grand Prix, scheduled for November 19, follows the Las Vegas Grand Prix on November 5. Pirelli’s analysis from the previous event highlighted severe degradation, especially affecting the left front tire, as teams attempted to stretch stints for strategic gains. Despite utilizing the hardest tire compounds—C1, C2, and C3—the high lateral forces inherent to the circuit raised fears of potential tire failures.
The new tire regulations dictate that the cumulative 25-lap limit encompasses not only racing laps but also those completed during Safety Car and Virtual Safety Car periods. Exclusions apply for formation laps and post-checkered flag laps. Given the race distance of 57 laps, teams will be required to pit at least twice.
This safety-driven measure is independent of ongoing discussions among the FIA, F1, and team stakeholders regarding a potential mandatory two-stop regulation aimed at enhancing race competitiveness. While proposed changes to tire life limits and specifications were addressed, no agreements were finalized during the recent F1 Commission meeting, with further discussions scheduled into 2026.
