Imola – Max Verstappen demonstrated his versatility by testing a Ferrari 296 GT3 at the Nurburgring, where he reportedly set a new lap record under the alias "Franz Hermann" during an official endurance series test. Despite his apparent success, Red Bull team principal Christian Horner stressed that the Dutchman’s priorities remain firmly with Formula 1.
Horner acknowledged Verstappen’s passion for racing across different platforms. “He was very keen to run at the Nurburgring. It’s something we’ve known about for quite some time. He went there, did an incredible job, and really enjoyed himself,” Horner remarked. However, he firmly stated, “He’s not going to miss a race, that’s for sure. The focus obviously has to be here on the day job.”
Verstappen’s participation in the Ferrari test, while welcomed by Horner, has raised questions regarding future ambitions, including possible entries in major endurance events like the Nurburgring 24 Hours. As Red Bull prepares for a partnership with Ford in the coming year, the optics of a Ford-supported driver racing for a rival manufacturer could complicate matters.
Historically, F1 drivers have embraced opportunities in multiple racing disciplines, as seen with drivers like Fernando Alonso and Nico Hulkenberg. However, Horner emphasized that while the team supports Verstappen’s passion for diverse competition, F1 remains the priority.
