Russell Clinches Pole Position at Singapore Grand Prix
Singapore, September 16, 2023 – George Russell secured pole position in a dramatic qualifying session for the Singapore Grand Prix, outpacing reigning champion Max Verstappen by 0.182 seconds. This marked Russell’s second pole of the season and a new track record at Marina Bay, with a time of 1:29.158.
Russell’s performance was particularly impressive as he rebounded from an incident during FP2 that limited his practice time. He showcased remarkable pace, setting two rapid laps during Q3, including two sector bests on his initial run. “Amazing to be on pole position,” Russell stated, reflecting on his difficult day prior. “Of course, there’s a long, sweaty race tomorrow, but I knew there was potential in the car. I’m very happy to be on pole.”
Verstappen’s second-place finish in qualifying was impacted by a mistake in the final sector, which he attributed to dirty air from Lando Norris. “That was a bit of a shame,” he acknowledged. “Otherwise, I think it could’ve been close for pole.”
Oscar Piastri, the current championship leader, qualified third, stating that he felt he had extracted maximum performance from his McLaren despite being 0.366 seconds off the pole time. “I think it’s been a good weekend so far,” he noted.
Kimi Antonelli and Lando Norris rounded out the top five, with Antonelli finishing fourth and Norris fifth, the latter struggling to find pace throughout the session.
In the midfield, Isack Hadjar led the pack in eighth place, followed by Oliver Bearman and Fernando Alonso in ninth and tenth, respectively. Nico Hulkenberg achieved a season-best 11th in his Sauber.
Notable performances included Liam Lawson, who qualified 14th despite recovering from two crashes in practice, while Yuki Tsunoda recorded his worst qualifying performance since the Hungarian Grand Prix, finishing 15th.
