Hamilton’s Fifth-Place Qualifying at British GP: Mistake Costs Front Row Shot
Lewis Hamilton, the seven-time Formula 1 champion, will start fifth in the British Grand Prix after a critical mistake at Turn 16 during qualifying. Despite showing promising pace throughout the session, an understeer on his final lap thwarted his bid for a front-row start.
Hamilton noted, “Pretty decent qualifying… I was definitely feeling more comfortable with the set-up of the car.” He expressed optimism about the team’s progress since their upgrade in Austria, highlighting improvements in car balance and setup collaboration with his engineer, Riccardo Adami. “I think right up until the last corner I was probably close to second on the grid, but had a bit of understeer… I lost over a tenth,” he said.
Max Verstappen seized pole position, narrowly edging out the McLarens after a dominant qualifying performance, as Ferrari continued to demonstrate a resurgence in form. “It will be very, very hard to beat the McLarens or the Red Bulls," Hamilton conceded. "But when there’s a will, there’s a way, so I’ll give absolutely everything tomorrow.”
Hamilton’s recent transition to Ferrari has been met with enthusiastic support from fans, further fueling his motivation. "To be in the red car here… the support’s been incredible," he remarked, preparing for a challenging race ahead amidst high expectations on home turf.
