Turkish Grand Prix Poised to Fill 2026 Calendar Gap
The Turkish Grand Prix could stage a Formula 1 race in 2026 if Madrid’s new racetrack, Madring, is not completed in time. Confirmed by F1 on June 10, the 2026 calendar includes the Spanish capital’s debut on September 13, pending the track’s readiness by May 30, 2026.
Construction of the 5.4 km circuit, featuring 22 corners and a banked bend, faces opposition from local political groups, raising concerns about meeting deadlines. The Istanbul Park circuit, now managed by the Turkish Automobile Sports Federation (TOSFED), last hosted F1 events during the pandemic in 2020 and 2021.
Eren Uclertopragı, TOSFED president, expressed a desire for a more permanent F1 presence in Turkey, stating, “We aim to secure a long-term contract, not just a one-off replacement race." He noted robust governmental support, with key officials backing the initiative.
Uclertopragı emphasized Istanbul’s strategic advantages for F1, stating, “Turkey has a unique track, a population of 85 million, and a strong automotive market.” The geographic proximity to several countries enhances its appeal, making it a viable option for logistics alongside the Azerbaijan GP.
With favorable September weather and school resuming, Uclertopragı believes organizational hurdles can be successfully navigated, potentially solidifying Turkey’s place in the F1 calendar.
As the situation develops, the motorsport community will watch closely, particularly with the fate of the Emilia-Romagna GP also uncertain for 2026.
