United States Grand Prix Sprint Qualifying Report
Max Verstappen secured pole position for the Sprint race at the United States Grand Prix, edging out Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri. Verstappen’s dominant lap of 1:32.143 saw him beat Norris by a slender 0.071 seconds, timing the fastest sectors in both the first and last portions of the Circuit of The Americas.
Reflecting on his performance, Verstappen remarked, “It’s been a nice qualifying… It was just about trying to put it all together when it matters.” This result is pivotal for Red Bull Racing, which entered Austin anticipating a strong showing from McLaren due to the circuit’s technical challenges. Despite uncertainties regarding race pace after just one practice session, Verstappen expressed optimism about converting his pole advantage into a competitive Sprint race.
Norris recorded the session’s best middle sector but could not match the outright speed of Verstappen. Piastri, despite finishing 0.309 seconds behind his teammate and 0.38 seconds off pole, secured third on the grid.
Notably, Nico Hulkenberg qualified fourth for Sauber, marking his first top-10 appearance of the season, 0.502 seconds off the pace. George Russell followed in fifth place, with Mercedes employing a strategy that allowed him to complete two fast laps on a single set of tires during the SQ3 session. Fernando Alonso and Carlos Sainz rounded out the top six.
Lewis Hamilton led Ferrari in eighth ahead of Alex Albon and Charles Leclerc, who experienced a disappointing tenth-place finish.
Andrea Kimi Antonelli narrowly missed SQ3, finishing 11th, just 0.006 seconds behind Hamilton, while Isack Hadjar and Pierre Gasly followed in 12th and 13th, respectively. Liam Lawson encountered track limits issues and qualified 15th, while Oliver Bearman and Franco Colapinto struggled with timing and track position, finishing 16th and 17th. Yuki Tsunoda qualified 18th, hindered by contention with Lawson, while Esteban Ocon and Gabriel Bortoleto rounded out the grid in 19th and 20th after traffic misfortunes.
The stage is set for an exciting Sprint race, with Verstappen aiming to bolster Red Bull’s position in the championship amidst fierce competition from McLaren.
