Verstappen Unfazed by New Front Wing Regulations Ahead of Spanish GP
Max Verstappen has downplayed the potential impact of the FIA’s recent clampdown on front wing flexing, asserting that it will not significantly affect the performance of his Red Bull Racing team. As Formula 1 prepares for the Spanish Grand Prix in Barcelona, stricter tests on aero-elasticity are set to be enforced after similar regulations were implemented for rear wings in the previous seasons.
“Not for us. I can say that with quite a lot of confidence,” Verstappen stated, dismissing concerns that the new rules would hinder his team’s competitiveness. He expressed skepticism about the effectiveness of the flexing features, suggesting Red Bull may not have fully capitalized on them: “I think those wings never really gave us a massive performance gain. I don’t know if we got it wrong or didn’t extract the most out of it.”
While many teams, notably McLaren, have been scrutinized for innovating in this area, Verstappen believes that any adjustments will be manageable across the grid. “If you have a good car, you have a good car. The front wing bends a bit less,” he remarked.
Following a notable victory at Imola, where Verstappen demonstrated superior pace, he remains cautious regarding McLaren’s true speed heading into Barcelona. “Imola was very positive, but replicating something like that… I don’t know. We’ll try to do our best,” he mentioned, highlighting the uncertainty of performance consistency between different circuits.
Despite having secured two wins on high-speed tracks, Verstappen acknowledged Red Bull’s challenges on street circuits. “All the street circuits will be difficult car-wise,” he noted, emphasizing that high-speed corners suit the RB21’s strengths. “We just need to try and bring that a bit more down to the medium-speed and especially the low-speed,” he stated.
The upcoming Spanish GP presents a critical juncture for teams as they adapt to regulatory changes and seek to maximize performance on a circuit that favors high-downforce configurations.
