United States Grand Prix Sprint: Verstappen Claims Victory Amid First-Lap Chaos
Max Verstappen secured victory in the United States Grand Prix Sprint, narrowing his title deficit to 55 points as the championship series heads toward its conclusion. With six grands prix and two Sprint events remaining, the stakes have never been higher.
In a dramatic start, Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris of McLaren collided with Sauber’s Nico Hulkenberg, resulting in a catastrophic first lap that eliminated all three drivers, along with Fernando Alonso. Piastri, starting third, had a strong start and attempted to overtake Norris but was hit by Hulkenberg, who had nowhere to go on the inside.
McLaren CEO Zak Brown criticized the incident, stating, “Neither of our drivers was to blame. Some amateur hour driving from other drivers up there in front … clearly Nico drove into Oscar, and he had no business being where he was.”
The race was promptly red-flagged to clear debris but resumed on lap six with Verstappen in the lead. George Russell, who had maintained a close second place, attempted an aggressive maneuver on lap nine but lost control, allowing Verstappen to extend his lead without further challenge.
Post-race, Verstappen remarked, “It took a few laps after the safety car to have decent pace, so we need to figure out what was going on… we won the sprint, which is most important.”
Russell ultimately secured second place, an unexpected gain after the chaos of the first lap. “I knew you don’t get many opportunities with Max, so I saw half a chance and sent it,” Russell commented on his attempt to overtake Verstappen.
Carlos Sainz finished third, stating, “We had solid pace… we brought home P3, which feels really good.” Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc rounded out the top five, leveraging their positions to earn valuable championship points.
Alex Albon and Yuki Tsunoda finished sixth and seventh, respectively, with Tsunoda making a remarkable gain of 11 places at the start. Despite navigating early chaos, Oliver Bearman’s eighth-place finish was marred by a ten-second penalty, demoting him to 15th after penalization.
The Sprint concluded under yet another safety car when Lance Stroll collided with Esteban Ocon, further underlining the tumultuous nature of the event.
