Red Bull Faces Challenging Start with RB21 Amid Tsunoda’s Transition
Suzuka, Japan – The ongoing Formula 1 season sees Red Bull Racing grappling with a challenging start, currently positioned third in the championship standings. Max Verstappen’s victory in Japan briefly disrupted McLaren’s early dominance, but the RB21’s complexities have hindered overall performance.
The team aimed to simplify the RB20’s design to broaden the operating window and enhance setup versatility. However, the RB21 has proven difficult for drivers to master, particularly Yuki Tsunoda, who replaced Liam Lawson after two races due to underwhelming results.
Despite a shaky start, Tsunoda showed promising signs at Suzuka, moving up from the lower ranks where Lawson had struggled. "I can at least climb out of the bottom ranks," Tsunoda stated, noting his target is to maintain a competitive gap to Verstappen while breaking into the points.
Performance Analysis
Tsundoda’s initial performances have revealed an ongoing adaptation to the RB21’s characteristics—particularly its front-end responsiveness. His qualifying sessions have been marred by mistakes, reminiscent of Lawson’s challenges in swiftly acclimating to the car. Tsunoda acknowledged these issues: "I’m trying to understand how this car works… I don’t think I understand even half of it yet."
Tsunoda’s struggle to optimize tire warm-up and management has also been a critical factor. He admitted, “Max senses more things in the car than I do,” highlighting the sensitivity of modern tires and the necessity of precise temperature control. This is an area where Verstappen’s experience gives him a competitive edge.
Building Relationships and Trust
Tsunoda is also working to establish strong communication with his new track engineer, Richard Wood, a dynamic that has proven vital for Verstappen’s success. "We have to make everything much smoother operationally," Tsunoda reflected on the collaboration process.
To facilitate Tsunoda’s acclimatization, Red Bull has organized intensive simulator sessions and practice in an RB19, providing invaluable experience away from race pressures.
