Vettel’s Potential Succession of Marko Addressed by Wheatley
In light of recent speculation regarding Sebastian Vettel potentially succeeding Dr. Helmut Marko as Red Bull’s motorsport advisor, Jonathan Wheatley, the former sporting director, voiced support for Marko’s continued leadership. Marko, 82, has held the position since 2005 and has been instrumental in nurturing talent such as Vettel and current world champion Max Verstappen.
Vettel confirmed ongoing discussions with Marko about a possible future role, stating, “There have been a few headlines recently. I still get along great with Helmut, and we’re in contact regarding the topic. [Talks are] not yet that intensive or in-depth. It’s perhaps something that could play a role. In what form remains to be seen.”
Wheatley, speaking at a press conference ahead of the Austrian Grand Prix, emphasized the challenges of taking on Marko’s role, expressing hope for Marko’s longevity in the position. “I can’t quite imagine how any one individual could do that. … I believe the conversations have been confirmed between the two parties, but whether that comes to anything, I don’t know,” Wheatley remarked.
In agreement, Vettel designated Marko as "irreplaceable," underscoring his immense impact on Red Bull’s success. “His character alone has made a very significant contribution since 2005,” Vettel stated. He acknowledged Marko’s repeated mentions of retirement but hoped for his continued presence, recognizing Marko’s pragmatism regarding the future.
With both figures affirming Marko’s essential role, the immediate landscape of Red Bull Racing remains stable, with no imminent changes expected in the team’s leadership structure.
