Russell Affirms Commitment to Mercedes Amid Verstappen Speculation
George Russell has strongly indicated his intent to remain with Mercedes in Formula 1, stating that the likelihood of leaving the team in 2026 is "exceptionally low."
Russell’s future had come under scrutiny following his comments during the Austrian GP weekend, where he suggested that team principal Toto Wolff was in talks with Max Verstappen’s management regarding a potential move for the four-time world champion. Verstappen, currently contracted with Red Bull until 2028, has performance-related escape clauses that may allow him to maneuver before the 2026 regulatory shift.
Both Russell and rookie teammate Andrea Kimi Antonelli have uncertain futures with the team, but Russell expressed confidence in his standing. “Every team has two seats available, and it’s normal that every team is considering what the future holds,” he remarked. He emphasized his satisfaction with Mercedes, saying, “Toto has never let me down,” and he expects to continue with the team.
While acknowledging interest from other teams, Russell confirmed he has not engaged in discussions with them, citing his loyalty to Mercedes. “I’ve been focused on my side. I am loyal to Mercedes. Everything will work itself out,” he stated.
Looking ahead, Russell noted that there are many uncertainties with the forthcoming 2026 regulations and affirmed that Mercedes remains the preferred environment. “Consistency gives you your best shot,” he added, reflecting on the importance of stability as the teams prepare for significant changes.
Wolff hinted at a potential resolution concerning driver contracts around the summer break, although Russell did not specify a timeline. He did convey optimism about the future, stating, “I feel I’m performing at a high level,” reinforcing his belief in both his and the team’s prospects heading into the next season.
