Antonelli Aims for Consistency After First F1 Podium
Montreal, Canada – Andrea Kimi Antonelli marked a significant milestone in his Formula 1 career by securing his first podium finish at the recent Canadian Grand Prix. After his disappointing debut at the Italian GP, where he crashed out just ten minutes into practice, Antonelli has steadily improved, demonstrating resilience and potential in his first season with Mercedes.
The talented 17-year-old experienced a rough start at Monza, where team principal Toto Wolff accepted responsibility for the decision to put him in the car under pressure. Reflecting on that experience, Antonelli admitted it impacted his approach in subsequent races, particularly in practice sessions where his caution led to missed opportunities.
"Canada was really important for me," said Antonelli. "Achieving third place was a big relief, especially after coming close earlier in the season."
His performances have shown promise, highlighted by a sprint pole in Miami and consistent top-five qualifying spots. However, Antonelli recognized that he has been overly conservative at times. "I think I overcorrected after Monza, and now I’m on the safe side," he stated, emphasizing the necessity of confidence while navigating the competitive landscape of Formula 1, where fractions of a second can make or break a race.
With the next race in Austria, Antonelli expressed optimism about developing a more aggressive approach. "It’s essential to be at the top of my game. I can’t keep arriving in qualifying with so many question marks about grip and car performance,” he noted, pointing out the importance of maximizing practice sessions to build confidence before qualifying.
As Antonelli looks ahead, his focus is on converting recent successes into consistent performance, striving to maintain momentum in the tight F1 championship battle. The upcoming weekends will be pivotal for his development and future prospects within the sport.
