Imola Qualifying Report: Aston Martin’s Strategic Tire Choice Shines
Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll achieved surprising qualifying positions of fifth and sixth at the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix, demonstrating Aston Martin’s strategic acumen amid a backdrop of new tire challenges.
The introduction of Pirelli’s softer C6 compound for 2025 at Imola aimed to enhance street circuit action by encouraging diverse tire strategies. However, teams approached the weekend with caution regarding the new tires’ performance under qualifying pressures. Initial practice sessions indicated promise, yet qualifying revealed that the C5 medium tire maintained competitive pace with the C6, surprising Pirelli and teams alike.
Aston Martin’s decision to conserve an extra set of medium tires proved shrewd. Both drivers utilized the mediums effectively during qualifying, allowing them to secure top positions with an additional set on standby. Team Principal Mike Krack guided this strategic tire selection, emphasizing the importance of flexibility throughout the sessions.
Alonso noted the uncertainty surrounding tire performance, mentioning, “We decided to do one soft and one medium in each of the sessions to cover every possibility.” Stroll echoed this sentiment, highlighting Aston Martin’s singular hard tire allocation for the race as a calculated risk, given the difficulty of overtaking on the Imola circuit.
The weekend also marked the debut of a comprehensive upgrade package for Aston Martin, featuring enhancements initially applied to Stroll’s car on Friday and later integrated into Alonso’s AMR25. Positive initial feedback from the team suggests that these upgrades significantly contributed to their qualifying success.
Reflecting on the mixed day, Alonso acknowledged the team’s progress: “Maybe the times are a little bit too optimistic with the upgrade, but we’re definitely not in the same situation as at the first race.” He tempered expectations for race day, suggesting that the car’s race pace might not match the qualifying performance.
As both drivers look ahead, Alonso expressed a long-term vision for the team under the upcoming 2026 regulations, stating his desire to compete for wins rather than merely points. With a pivotal performance in qualifying, Aston Martin aims to solidify its place in the midfield battle and leverage its newfound pace in the race.
The race promises to be a critical test of both tire strategy and vehicle performance, with the potential for major implications in the ongoing championship narrative.
