Verstappen Shatters Lap Record in GT3 Test at Nürburgring
Max Verstappen showcased his driving prowess during a recent GT3 test at the Nürburgring’s Nordschleife, operating under the alias "Franz Hermann." The four-time Formula 1 champion piloted the Emil Frey Racing Ferrari 296 GT3, a vehicle typically used in the DTM series.
Sources indicate that Verstappen not only matched but exceeded the NLS GT3 lap record set by Norwegian driver Christian Krognes, clocking a time under the previous record of 7m49.578s. Despite the impressive lap time, Verstappen emphasized that his primary objective was not to break records but to assist Emil Frey Racing in its preparations for a potential entry into the highly competitive Nürburgring 24 Hours.
"They asked me for a fake name, so I said let’s make it as German as we can," Verstappen stated, explaining his choice to avoid drawing immediate attention. He continued, "It was fun and great to get to know the track."
With an extensive simulator background—reportedly completing thousands of laps before the test—Verstappen felt well-prepared to gauge the actual grip levels of the new tarmac and the car’s performance. His experience allowed for a seamless transition from virtual to real-world racing.
"I still get more adrenaline from F1," he remarked, reflecting on the different racing experiences. The day was characterized by favorable weather and relatively light traffic, factors that contributed to a productive day of testing.
For Verstappen to compete in GT3 events at the Nordschleife, he will need to obtain a DMSB Permit, potentially requiring progression through lower categories unless special dispensation is granted.
Verstappen’s commitment to gaining experience off the F1 circuit aligns with his passion for motorsport, as he continues to explore new driving challenges.
