Birmingham Supercross Report: Tomac’s Trials and Deegan’s Disqualification

Red Bull KTM’s Eli Tomac experienced a tumultuous race night at the Birmingham Supercross, marked by a series of mishaps. Despite qualifying fastest, Tomac’s heat race took a disastrous turn during an aggressive maneuver against Monster Energy Yamaha Star Racing’s Justin Cooper. The collision resulted in Cooper crashing and his leg becoming entangled in Tomac’s bike, necessitating a stop from Tomac to free Cooper. Post-race, Tomac described the incident as a racing accident, stating, “I shot the gap and it didn’t work out,” acknowledging that he could have exercised more patience.

The complications continued as Cooper’s handlebars damaged Tomac’s airbox, pulling the number plate and air filter partially out. After receiving assistance from his mechanic, Jade Dungey, Tomac managed to salvage a 15th place in the heat. He ultimately finished third in the main event, struggling with pace early on. Unable to advance past his teammate, Jorge Prado, and subsequently overtaken by Ken Roczen, Tomac settled for a podium finish, though it fell short of expectations. Moving forward, he will need to counter Hunter Lawrence’s momentum in the upcoming round in Detroit.

In the 250 class, Monster Energy Yamaha Star Racing’s Haiden Deegan initially appeared to dominate the East/West Showdown, starting from the 10th position and decisively passing top competitors. However, Deegan’s victory was nullified due to a track-cutting penalty. In a candid post-race statement, he expressed his dissatisfaction, noting, “I don’t care, honestly… Everyone knows who won.” Deegan remains a formidable contender and will return at the St. Louis round, where he aims to clinch his second 250SX West title.
