Herlings Reflects on MXGP Challenges and Future Aspirations
Jeffrey Herlings, the Dutch motocross veteran, recently addressed the competitive landscape of the MXGP series, underscoring the strength of his rivals. “It’s strong, man. You’ve got all these World Champions and winners,” Herlings stated, emphasizing that the current field is unique with all top competitors healthy and contending for victories.
Herlings, who recently secured his first World Championship Grands Prix win with Honda, reflected on the significance of the achievement. “It was special,” he remarked. “It took me 10 more years to go 1-1 at the opening round again. Nobody knew what to expect with the new brand and team.” He has now achieved 114 MXGP wins, marking a notable milestone in his career.
Looking ahead to the 2026 MXGP World Championship, Herlings expressed a commitment to consistency over the 19-race season. “It’s not a sprint; it’s like a marathon,” he explained. His strategy focuses on podium finishes each week, aiming to maintain a tight point margin. “My goal is to be around the 50-point mark.”
When asked about his potential for claiming the championship, Herlings acknowledged, “I think I can. I’m not saying I will, but I think I’ve got the potential.”
Despite the grueling nature of the sport, which often includes physical setbacks, Herlings remains driven by passion rather than financial motivation. “At some point, you made enough money for a comfortable life,” he noted. “For me, it’s about doing what you love and doing it as good as you can.”
This unwavering dedication highlights Herlings’ commitment as he navigates the challenges of elite motocross competition.
