Monster Energy Yamaha’s Cole Davies Clinches 250SX Championship in Philadelphia
In a stunning turnaround, Cole Davies has ascended from an unknown rookie to the 250SX Champion in just 16 months, solidifying his status with his fifth victory of the season at the Philadelphia Supercross. His win came amidst a chaotic first lap where he narrowly escaped a significant crash involving Seth Hammaker, showcasing not only his skill but also a touch of fortune, as his front wheel slipped between Hammaker’s bike and frame during the incident.
With this triumph, Davies becomes only the second New Zealander to secure an AMA Supercross Championship, following in the footsteps of his mentor, Ben Townley. Reflecting on his rapid progression, Davies remarked, “Four or five years ago, we sat in Ben Townley’s living room and set out a plan… what we’ve planned out has happened exactly.”
Meanwhile, Quad Lock Honda’s Joey Savatgy is experiencing a resurgence after overcoming a mid-season slump caused by a foot injury sustained in Indianapolis. Savatgy achieved a career-best fourth-place finish in Philadelphia, a result last matched in Minneapolis 2019. Notably, he remained on the lead lap, a feat shared only with the three championship contenders. “When I double onto the start straight, the flames went off and I was like, ‘There is no way,’” Savatgy commented on his impressive performance during the PulpMX Show.
As Savatgy prepares for the upcoming AMA Pro Motocross Championship, his future remains uncertain, but his current form could attract multiple suitors should he enter the free agency market.
