Lead: Michael Rigdon’s ambitious restoration of a 2013 Yamaha YZ250 pays homage to the iconic Fifth Dragon brand, closely associated with Honda of Troy and Yamaha of Troy racing success.

Project Overview: The Yamaha YZ250 underwent a comprehensive rebuild, driven by Rigdon’s personal connection and the motorcycle’s storied history, including its pivotal role in AMA competition since the early 2000s.

Background: The Fifth Dragon logo, introduced by industry figure Jim Hale, represents a significant chapter in motocross history, marking numerous championships and milestones, including Yamaha of Troy’s first 125 East/West SX titles.

Acquisition: Rigdon sourced the YZ250 from a dealer associated with high school friend Phil Alderton. Recognizing the project’s potential despite its disrepair, he committed to a full restoration.

Mechanics and Restoration: After initial challenges in finding a qualified mechanic, Rigdon connected with Jeffrey Kiddle, whose own history with the Fifth Dragon added value to the collaboration. Rigdon’s project entailed:

  • Engine Rebuild: Utilizing top-end piston kits from Wiseco and complete gasket kits from Cometic.
  • Chassis Overhaul: Involving a complete tear-down, vapor blasting, and reassembly.
  • Suspension Upgrades: Refurbished and updated components, including re-valved forks and new springs from Enzo Racing.
  • Custom Touches: Includes new plastics from Polisport and semi-custom graphics from Decal MX.

Technical Components:

  • Engine: Rebuilt with a V-Force4 Reed Cage and modifications handled by mt-llc.com.
  • Performance Parts: Exhaust upgrades like the FMF Fatty Pipe and Shorty Silencer provide enhanced output.
  • Braking System: Upgraded hydraulic brake lines and refurbished calipers ensure responsive handling.

Key Suppliers:

  • Tires: Replacing stock with Dunlop MX34 front and rear.
  • Chain: New Gold X-Ring Race Chain and sprockets sourced from Pro-X.
  • Lubrication and Maintenance: Klotz R-50 Two-Stroke Pre-Mix for optimal performance.
