Webb Eyes Supercross-Only Future as Motocross Transition Looms

In a revealing conversation on the PulpMX Show, Cooper Webb, three-time 450SX Monster Energy AMA Supercross Champion, signaled his intent to pivot to a supercross-only racing schedule, potentially starting in 2027. The announcement comes as Webb prepares for what he has indicated will be his final full season in Pro Motocross.

Discussing his recent performance at the Philadelphia Supercross, Webb addressed his contract status with Monster Energy Yamaha Star Racing. When asked about his return for 2027, he remarked, “I think it’s a good percent… We jell really well. From my side, I’ve made it clear this will definitely be my last motocross season. Supercross-only is the way I want to go.”

Webb’s success in supercross is notable; since 2019, he has amassed three 450SX titles, with 31 race wins and 82 podiums from 130 starts. By contrast, his motocross results tell a different story, with just one overall win (2019 Spring Creek National) and six podiums across 34 starts during the same timeframe.

The move towards an SX-only schedule reflects a common trajectory for seasoned riders looking to extend their careers with reduced physical demands associated with outdoor motocross. Webb’s comments also highlight the potential implications for the team, considering Yamaha’s commitments to other rising talents like Haiden Deegan, who is set to transition to the premier class full-time this summer.

Webb’s future plans may also include participation in international supercross events, as he has historically been part of the Paris Supercross roster. The discussion around the need for contracts to align amid evolving team dynamics underscores the complexities athletes face as they navigate career transitions.

As he approaches the 2023 Denver SX, Webb is keenly aware that this season may mark the end of an era in his professional riding career. The evolving scope of his ambitions indicates a strategic step towards consolidating his legacy in supercross.
