Tomac’s Final Performance at the Motocross of Nations
At 32 years old, Eli Tomac capped his tenure with Monster Energy Yamaha Star Racing at the 2025 Motocross of Nations, marking a significant chapter in his illustrious career. Despite Team USA facing adversity with injuries—Chase Sexton’s broken hand leaving a gap—Tomac’s commitment saw him return for a second consecutive year, underscoring his dedication to the team amidst challenging circumstances.
Tomac was originally slated as an Open rider on the Team USA roster, but following Sexton’s injury, he switched to the MXGP class, racing under the number 4. The team faced logistical challenges, having to transport equipment overseas as Cooper Webb stepped in for Chance Hymas on a 250.
Competing in England, Team USA demonstrated commendable resilience. Tomac holeshot the final moto, ultimately finishing third, helping secure a second-place overall finish for the team. His performance in the final heat was further noteworthy; finishing second overall to Australia’s Hunter Lawrence, he was the only rider to outperform a Lawrence throughout the event.
Reflecting on his day, Tomac stated, “I felt like I improved my riding every time on the track. Although I struggled a bit in qualifying, I was much better in the motos and was pretty happy with my riding.”
The team’s effort highlighted the unpredictability of the event, especially as the initial strong lineup was altered under duress. The potential strength of a Sexton-Deegan pairing contrasted sharply with that of Webb and Hampshire, leading to a scramble that ultimately yielded another second-place finish for Team USA.
While Tomac aims for another opportunity at the MXoN in the future, he still seeks his second victory—his first coming in 2022 at RedBud. As he transitions away from competitive motocross, Tomac’s commitment and performance have solidified his legacy within the sport.
