MXGP of Trentino: Herlings Dominates Amid Mechanical Drama
In a thrilling round of the MXGP at Trentino, Jeffrey Herlings delivered a stunning performance, securing victory in both races despite early challenges from mechanical issues and fierce competition.
Race One: Herlings Strikes Back
The morning Warm-Up saw Herlings clock the fastest time, getting the momentum he needed against reigning champion Romain Febvre, who faced a disappointing mechanical failure just before the Qualifying Round. Despite this setback, Febvre launched off the gate to earn his second Fox Holeshot Award of the season, leading an early French 1-2 with Tom Vialle.
However, Lucas Coenen, who started fourth, quickly surged through the field, briefly challenging Febvre for second before a high-speed crash sent him to 26th place after the first lap. Meanwhile, Herlings, starting outside the top ten, mounted an impressive comeback, overtaking Andrea Adamo midway through the race.
By lap 14, Herlings executed a daring pass on teammate Vialle and then charged past Febvre into the lead, crossing the finish line more than five seconds ahead of the champion. Vialle and Tim Gajser rounded out the podium.
Race Two: Febvre Struggles, De Wolf Triumphs
In the second race, Febvre’s misfortune continued as he was forced to start from gate 38, ultimately finishing 12th. The Fox Holeshot Award battle saw Kay de Wolf clinch his first Holeshot in MXGP, leading early with Coenen, Gajser, and Vialle behind him.
Herlings, starting near the back, worked his way steadily up the grid to claim fifth by lap four. His rivals, Gajser and Vialle, faced their own challenges, with Vialle crashing hard and dropping back, while Gajser struggled to keep pace with Coenen out front.
In a dramatic turn, Herlings overtook Vialle by lap seven, but fatigue and errors would see Vialle finishing seventh. Ultimately, Coenen maintained the lead to secure victory in race two, with Gajser finishing second and Herlings garnering a commendable fourth.
