John Tomac Honored as Grand Marshal: A Legacy in Off-Road Cycling

Cortez, Colorado – John Tomac, an iconic figure in off-road cycling and a significant influence in motocross, was named Grand Marshal for the upcoming event, acknowledging his monumental contributions to the sport. "His success as a racer speaks for itself, but what’s been more impressive is the impact he’s had on the sport of motocross by guiding Eli to become one of the greatest riders," said event organizer Clabaugh, who is credited with revitalizing Colorado’s motocross scene through Thunder Valley Motocross Park.

Tomac, originally from Owosso, Michigan, embarked on his racing career in 1985 in BMX and quickly rose to prominence, clinching his first championship at age 16. Sponsorship from Mongoose Bicycles and a relocation to Southern California facilitated his growth in mountain biking. His versatility extended to road cycling, leading to selections for the U.S.A. Cycling National Team, where he competed against elite talents in European World Cups while maintaining a full-time presence in mountain biking.

Throughout his illustrious career, Tomac dominated various disciplines within cycling, notably winning the National Off-Road Bicycle Association Championship across cross-country, downhill, and slalom events in 1988, along with multiple world and national championships before retiring in 2005 as the all-time winningest mountain biker.

Beyond his competitive achievements, Tomac has driven innovation in bike safety and technology, collaborating with well-known brands such as Bell Helmets and Oakley. He co-founded Tomac Bicycles, providing high-end, advanced models until 2013. After settling in Cortez, Colorado, he transitioned to ranch life, allowing him to support his son Eli Tomac’s ongoing racing career.

John Tomac’s contributions have left an indelible mark on multiple two-wheeled disciplines, cementing his legacy as a transformative figure in cycling history.
