MXGP Returns to South Africa in 2026: A Historic Comeback to Five Continents
MONACO — Infront Moto Racing has confirmed that the MXGP will return to South Africa for the first time in 18 years, with the MXGP of South Africa scheduled for July 4-5, 2026, in Johannesburg. This event marks a significant milestone as it expands the championship’s reach to five continents.
The MXGP’s history in South Africa dates back to 1985, when it first hosted a 250cc Grand Prix at Corobrik Park, won by Jacky Vimond. The championship returned for three consecutive rounds at Sun City from 2004 to 2006, featuring notable winners including Stefan Everts, Antonio Cairoli, Josh Coppins, and Mickael Pichon. The last event occurred in 2008 at Nelspruit, with Jonathan Barragan and Tommy Searle taking victory in MX1 and MX2.
The upcoming event highlights MXGP’s commitment to global expansion and its intention to deliver premier motocross competition to regions with rich motorsport legacies. The return of elite riders and teams to South Africa underscores the sport’s enduring popularity and historical significance in the country.
