SMX Next Program Updates for the 2026 Monster Energy SMX World Championship

In Racerhead #49, industry insider Davey Coombs revealed crucial updates regarding the SMX Next program for the upcoming 2026 Monster Energy SMX World Championship.

Key Changes Announced:

  1. Mandatory Protective Gear: A new regulation mandates all participants in amateur supercross, motocross, and SMX Playoffs to wear approved chest and back protectors. The gear must adequately cover the sternum, anterior ribs, posterior ribs, and spine from T1 to T12, and can be worn under or over the jersey.

  2. Concussion Testing: An updated rule has been introduced requiring riders to complete an ImPACT neurocognitive baseline test within two years prior to competition. Proof of this test must be provided at registration if requested.

  3. Age Requirements: To compete at the A/B level in 2026, riders must be at least 15 years old. Starting in 2027, the minimum age will rise to 16 years, with only A level riders allowed, effectively excluding B level riders and those under 16 from the program.

These adjustments align with the anticipated rule change set for 2027, whereby the minimum age for turning professional in AMA Supercross and Motocross will be established at 18.

Further details regarding the 2026 Monster Energy AMA Supercross rulebook will be made available once published.
