Phil Nicoletti Prepares for Canadian Nationals

As Phil Nicoletti gears up for his return to competitive motocross, he shared insights on the Canadian Nationals, track dynamics, and bike setup in his latest column on Racer X.

Upcoming Canadian Nationals
Nicoletti will soon tackle the diverse terrains found across Canadian tracks. In response to a fan’s query about the racecourses, he described Walton Raceway as "a smaller Unadilla," noting its similar ruts and dirt conditions. Other tracks include Gopher Dunes, which he likened to "Southwick on steroids," and Moncton/Riverglade, which he rated as his least favorite. His top pick remains Motocross Deschambault, though he noted he hasn’t raced there since 2019.

The complexity of the Canadian tracks, which vary in size and condition, poses different challenges compared to the American venues. "Some tracks are small and tight; others are larger and more open. While they might not get as rough, they still present tricky challenges," Nicoletti emphasized.

Bike Setup Insights
On the topic of bike setup, Nicoletti acknowledged its importance at the pro level but questioned its impact at the amateur level, particularly for weekend riders. He reflected on how some riders, like one queried in his column, may overanalyze bike adjustments despite performing similarly in speed. "It’s crucial to strike a balance between tweaking your setup and actually riding," Nicoletti advised. He encouraged riders to focus more on getting out on the track, suggesting that excessive tinkering may detract from the enjoyment of riding.
