Ducati Enters AMA Motocross as Cairoli Prepares for RedBud Showdown

Ducati will officially enter the AMA Motocross series, marking its 10th manufacturer in the league alongside established Japanese and European brands. Nine-time FIM Motocross World Champion Antonio Cairoli will debut on the #222 Desmo450 MX at tomorrow’s RedBud National. Cairoli is also slated to compete next week at Spring Creek, following a week of preparation in the U.S.

As part of the AMA’s homologation requirements, Ducati initiated the "early homologation" process for its 2026 model today. The manufacturer has a 90-day window to deliver 400 units to the U.S. market, with company representatives confident they will meet the deadline to avoid penalties.

Cairoli’s collaboration with Factory Connection for bike setup has shown promising results. After the recent Southwick National, he spent time refining his performance at a private practice track, achieving lap times that suggest a top-five finish in the second 450 moto is feasible.

Historically, RedBud has been a significant venue for Cairoli, having previously led Team Italy to a second-place finish in the 2018 MXON, despite later disqualification due to fuel regulations. In 2022, he guided Italy to a fourth overall finish in his final full-time season.

The atmosphere at Southwick was charged, with Cairoli receiving enthusiastic support from fans and engaging with fellow motocross icons like Chad Reed and James Stewart. His presence also seemed to motivate current competitors Jorge Prado and Tom Vialle, who both had strong performances, with Prado posting his best result to date in America.

In parallel, the absence of the Coenen brothers and MX2 World Champion Kay de Wolf was noted, with speculation surrounding their future in the series remaining unconfirmed.

Looking ahead, a top-seven finish would signify a successful debut for Cairoli and Ducati, given his competitive history.

Meanwhile, Honda faced a setback as 37-time FIM Trials World Champion Toni Bou had his flight from Spain canceled, delaying his arrival for scheduled exhibitions at RedBud alongside the Lawrence brothers. Honda’s continued presence in the sport underscores the brand’s commitment to innovation and competition.

As the season progresses, Vialle’s future remains uncertain, with indications that he may return to Europe following 2026.

In summary, with Ducati’s entry and Cairoli’s participation, this weekend’s RedBud National promises to be a pivotal moment in the AMA Motocross series. The competition continues to evolve, reflecting the dynamic landscape of motorcycle racing.
