Byron Claims Crucial Victory at Martinsville, Advances to Championship 4
Martinsville, VA — William Byron showcased exceptional skill and determination at Martinsville Speedway on Sunday, clinching victory in the Xfinity 500 elimination race. His win not only secures his spot in the NASCAR Cup Series Championship 4 but also eliminates Ryan Blaney, who finished second, from contention.
Byron dominated the race, leading for a career-best 304 laps. After a restart with 11 laps remaining, he decisively passed Blaney on lap 457 and maintained control for the final stretch, finishing 0.717 seconds ahead.
“We’ve been tested,” Byron remarked, expressing gratitude to fans and his team. “Going to Phoenix, we’ll try to kick [butt] there.”
Despite his disappointment, Blaney acknowledged Byron’s impressive move, stating, “I just got loose… I knew it was going to be tight. I tried to crowd as much as I could.” Blaney started 31st, making an impressive run up the field, leading 177 laps before his race faded in the final stages.
Byron’s win also resulted in the elimination of Christopher Bell, who finished seventh and lost his Championship 4 berth to Kyle Larson, the fifth-place finisher. Larson, along with Byron, will represent Hendrick Motorsports in the finale, while Joe Gibbs Racing’s Denny Hamlin and Chase Briscoe have already qualified.
Race Highlights:
- Byron dominated both Stages 1 and 2, leading all 130 laps in Stage 2, before losing the lead to Blaney during a pivotal caution.
