Race Report: 29th Motul Petit Le Mans
Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta – The 29th Motul Petit Le Mans experienced significant disruption during the fourth hour due to heavy rain and lightning, necessitating a 27-minute red flag. Cadillac’s #10 V-Series.R, driven by Ricky Taylor, currently leads the race after five hours.
The weather took a turn just after the race resumed following a mechanical issue with the #45 Wayne Taylor Racing Lamborghini. A sudden downpour prompted a flurry of pit stops for wet tires, notably including the #60 Acura, just ahead of a caution for debris caused by Max van der Snel in the #37 Intersport Racing ORECA LMP2.
As soon as the race began again, a collision between United Autosports’ #2 and #22 LMP2 entries resulted in both cars stranded in the grass, further delaying the action. At 3:48 PM ET, Race Control issued a red flag due to lightning, resuming the event at 4:15 PM.
Once racing resumed, the competition intensified. Renger van der Zande executed a double overtake at Turn 10 but subsequently collided with teammate Tom Blomqvist, prompting both cars to run off track. Van der Zande received a drive-through penalty shortly after a routine stop.
The race’s tension escalated when Álex Palou, piloting the #93 MSR Acura, collided with the #25 WRT BMW, which resulted in damage to both vehicles. Kevin Magnussen from WRT was able to exit the incident after a trip into the tire barrier.
With five hours and seven minutes remaining, Taylor re-entered the lead, followed by the #31 Cadillac Whelen V-Series.R in second, the #24 BMW M Team WRT Hybrid V8 in third, and the #7 Porsche Penske Motorsport 963 in fourth.
A three-car incident in the GTD class caused yet another yellow flag, with the #66 Gradient Racing Ford Mustang suffering significant damage.
Current standings in key categories include:
- LMP2: #04 CrowdStrike Racing by APR ORECA leads.
- GTD Pro: #14 Vasser Sullivan Racing Lexus RC F GT3 is in the lead.
- GTD: #34 Conquest Racing Ferrari holds the top position, with strong competition from the #70 Inception Racing 296 and #57 Winward Racing Mercedes-AMG GT3 Evo.
As the race continues, conditions remain unpredictable, raising the stakes for all contenders.
