Motorsports Update: Key Driver Changes and Pre-Race Insights at Portimão
Portimão, Portugal — The motorsport spotlight shifts to the Algarve International Circuit this weekend, with several significant updates in the driver lineup and performance insights as the GT World Challenge Europe prepares for competition.
Driver Changes
Rui Andrade, initially scheduled for a double-header in both Portimão and Barcelona, has stepped back and will concentrate on the #79 Iron Lynx Mercedes-AMG LMGT3 in the FIA World Endurance Championship. He has been replaced by Marcos Siebert in the #19 Team Motopark Mercedes-AMG GT3 EVO. Siebert brings experience from the International GT Open and a prior outing at the 2025 24 Hours of Spa.
In a separate development, Jim Pla is stepping in for Arthur Rougier at CSA Racing due to Rougier’s recovery from a wrist sprain sustained in an incident at the recent Sprint Cup finale. Rougier stated, “Unfortunately, the pain is still too significant for me to perform at 100%,” emphasizing the difficulty of his decision to withdraw.
Performance Insights
The pre-event testing sessions yielded promising results, with Fabian Schiller from Mercedes-AMG Team GetSpeed posting the fastest time at 1:42.974, edging out teammate Chris Lulham by 0.102 seconds. Arjun Maini of HRT Ford Racing followed closely in third. Loek Hartog led the Silver Cup category, while the Gold Cup was topped by Tom Fleming in the #58 Garage 59 McLaren.
Ahmad Al Harthy, driving for Oman Racing by Century Motorsport, expressed enthusiasm for his return to Portimão, reflecting on his previous experience in LMGTE. He acknowledged the competitive landscape, stating, “The Bronze class is maybe the second most competitive after Pro in terms of car numbers and real pace.”
Technical Developments
An unexpected highlight emerged with the unveiling of a KTM X-Bow GT2 adorned with ‘Evo 2027’ branding. This signifies potential advancements from the Austrian manufacturer, though an official announcement has yet to be made.
As the series evolves, this weekend’s events not only showcase the drivers’ skills but also the technical capabilities of the teams, setting the stage for an exciting race at Portimão.
Looking Ahead
Officials will launch Free Practice 1 shortly, and teams are eager to leverage the data from the pre-event tests to optimize performance. Stay tuned for more updates as the action unfolds on track.
